TIM Burton should not be penalized for his brave creativity attempts, nor his strong and wonderful advancement of claymation and computer animation techniques. Neither should the wonderful voice work of Johnny Depp (Victor, Charley and the Chocolate Factory), Helena Bonham Carter (Corpse Bride), Emily Watson (Victoria, Separate Lies, Equilibrium), nor Tracey Ullman (Nell Van Dort). The animation and voice-over acting was superb. And Tim Burton's creative ingenious for the storyline and characters is, again, wickedly superb. However, the story, as much potential as it has, is a disingenuous flop. None of the characters interact enough with one another in order to develop any emotion toward them. The love story is less than compelling. And the conflict and resolution is trite and badly scripted. There are moments of ironical humor playing on the demented schema, but it is not enough to rescue this film from its doom. The talent collaboration on both sides of the camera were not enough to patch up the problems. It is rather unfortunate. If the film would have been extended in time in order to develop the characters and plot, it might be worth seeing. Otherwise, I am utterly disappointed with Corpse Bride. |
